Hylas and the Naiads

Description

Once again, taking inspiration from my fellow DA member and good friend Gulliver63, particularly after his take on Goya, Family Goya I have added my take on a piece of fine art which was also inspired by Greek mythology.  According to the classic myth, Hylas was the son of Theiodamas of the Dryopians.  After king Theiodamas was killed in battle by Heracles, Hylas became Heracles' arms bearer and lover.  Heracles then persuaded Jason to let him take Hylas with him aboard the Argo, thus making the lad an Argonaut.  Later in the voyage, when Hylas was sent ashore to bring fresh water back to the ship he was lured to the Spring of Pegae by the naiads or water nymphs who had fallen in love with the handsome young lad and there was taken by them into their watery realm, never to be seen again.  Heracles was quite upset by Hylas' disappearance and searched for a long time, leaving the Argo to sail without him.  According to Valerius Flaccus in his Argonautica, Heracles never found Hylas because Hylas had fallen in love with the naiads and remained "to share their love and their power."  In my version, which is taken from a painting by John Waterhouse (c. 1896) en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hylas#/m…  I gave Futurama's Philip Fry, the perpetual loser when it comes to women, a chance with not one, but four lovely ladies, Leela, Lois Griffin, Francine Smith and my OC, Rhonda. (medium: pen and ink, Copic color pens, watercolors).
